The open enrollment period for Medicare coverage has officially gotten underway.

People 65 and older or who qualify can make changes to their medicare benefits.

Health experts said even for those who were happy with their plan in 2016, they still need to make sure to verify they’re going to have similar coverage next year.

“The plan options available to Tennesseans in 2017 are similar in some respects to what they got in 2016, but things like lists of prescription drugs that are covered or doctors that are available in a given network can and do change,” said Ryan McCostlin.

In Davidson County, there were 26 different Medicare Part D plans to choose from.

Experts said choosing carefully can save thousands of dollars. Open enrollment has been scheduled to end December 7.
