A 34-year-old pedestrian was hit and killed on Interstate 65 following a crash.
The crash happened around 6:25 a.m. Saturday on I-65 under the Fern Avenue overpass.
Authorities identified the 34-year-old victim from Antioch as Brian Keith Reed.
An investigation showed Reed was involved in a single-vehicle crash at the split for Interstate 65 South and Interstate 24 West.
He then started walking north on the I-65 South shoulder and was under Fern Avenue where the shoulder was only approximately 24 inches wide.
That’s when Reed was hit by a Nissan Frontier pickup truck that had been traveling in the far right lane.
Police said the Frontier was also hit from behind by a Nissan Xterra SUV. They were not certain if the Frontier was hit before or after it hit Reed.
According to reports, the driver of the Xterra was ready change lanes when the Frontier started to brake.
Officials said the driver of the Xterra reported being unable to avoid hitting the Frontier. They believe that caused the Frontier to hit the concrete wall and possibly Reed.
Reed was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died.
The driver of the Frontier, identified as 48-year-old Salvador Austria, and two of his passengers were taken to Skyline Medical Center for minor injuries.
Authorities confirmed Austria was charged with driving without a license and failure to provide proof of insurance.
The 21-year-old driver of the Xterra was not injured.
Officials confirmed there was no sign at the scene that alcohol or drugs were involved. The investigation remained ongoing.
