A man suffering from a gunshot wound was found on the campus of Vanderbilt University after a shooting at a south Nashville motel.

Officials with Metro Nashville Police said the victim was found Thursday morning near the Owen Graduate School of Business on 21st Avenue South.

According to police, the victim was shot at a La Quinta Inn on Sidco Drive, just off of Harding Place.

Detectives said the man had been with four or five friends at the inn after partying earlier in the night. One of the friends allegedly contacted someone for a drug transaction.

When the suspect showed up for the transaction, an argument began over payment. Authorities said the suspect then produced a handgun and began firing shots. That's when the victim was struck in the thigh.

Officials said the victim was headed to the hospital by private vehicle when he spotted a security guard and asked for help. It was unknown from there how he made it to the hospital.

The victim was being treated at the hospital when he was interviewed by detectives. Authorities said he was having trouble remembering all the details, but his injuries were not life-threatening.

The suspect description was vague. Authorities confirmed the shooter was a black male with dreads, standing around 6'.

Anyone with information on this shooting has been urged to contact police.
