A warning has been given in Coffee County, and it’s one that could affect everyone.
Law enforcement there have been warning the public of a scam that could cost victims hundreds, even thousands, of dollars.
People have been calling residents and posing as either the deputy or circuit court clerks saying they owe money for missing a jury call or for outstanding fines.
The callers ask for amounts anywhere from $300 to $3,000, and the ID on the call has been showing up as County Office Building.
“These people are good at what they do, and when they saw that you know it was showing up a county government phone number, which a lot of people don't know you can spoof a phone number and make it show up as any number they want to, that's what really surprised them," said Coffee County Sheriff Steve Graves.
Sheriff Graves added their IT department has been working to trace those calls.
