The 58-year-old man found shot and killed inside a West Nashville convenience store has been described as kind and soft spoken.

John Daniel Stevens was murdered at the Exxon on Charlotte Pike near Interstate 40 on Tuesday night.

Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department described the incident as brutal during a press conference near where the two suspects were found.

Daniel Clark, age 28, and 15-year-old Trinity Quinn face several charges, including criminal homicide for the death of Stevens.

"It's upsetting," Kyle Larrabee repeatedly told NewsChannel 5. "They took somebody's life, for what?"

Those who frequented the gas station said Stevens worked late afternoon and nights. Regular customers said he was simply a great man.

"He was the sweetest man, just very kind and just gentle with a sweet soul," Emily Lipman, a business owner, said. "I go there almost everyday, and for this to happen is heart-wrenching."

Another customer said Stevens loved to read and was always hardworking.

On Wednesday morning, lawmakers also held a moment of silence honoring Stevens.
