A man was killed in a shooting at White's Creek High School, and two suspects were believed to be responsible and on the run.
Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department said a 23-year-old man, identified as James G. Nevils, was shot and wounded outside of the high school at 8:10 p.m Friday during an altercation.
Police confirmed Nevils passed away just before midnight Friday.
A basketball game was scheduled for 6 p.m. at the school gym, but police said there was no disruption to the game. The teams playing were Pearl Cohn and White's Creek.
A school official said once officials were notified of the incident, referees called a timeout and put the school on lockdown.
Police said the victim told his friends that he was going to take a young child to the restroom, but instead walked outside to meet with someone else.
It was not clear if it was a prearranged meeting or just by happenstance. Authorities said Nevils spoke with two individuals for 20 or 30 seconds before the shooting. A friend went to check on him and found him injured on the sidewalk.
The two suspects fled following the shooting, and police said they've been interviewing Nevils’ friends to learn why he went outside at halftime and whether he was expecting to meet someone.
The game was able to play on and finish, but it was unclear if anyone involved was a student of either schools.
The victim was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for surgery where he passed away.
