Senate Passes Bill To Make Lawsuit Losers Pay

Posted

The state Senate has passed a bill that would force people who sue state employees or elected officials to pay legal fees if they fail in a lawsuit.

Supporters said the bill would prevent frivolous lawsuits from being filed and save taxpayers money. Opponents argued it allows elected officials to insulate themselves from being sued, especially when they sexually harass the workers underneath them.

The legislation came as both the state attorney general's office and a House committee investigate Representative Jeremy Durham following allegations that he sent inappropriate text messages to women who worked in the Legislature. Durham has denied any wrongdoing.

The measure would apply to government workers and elected officials who are sued personally but not officially.

The bill was set to head back to the House.
