A student has been expelled from Siegel High School in Murfreesboro after reportedly bringing a loaded gun to school.
Officials with Rutherford County Schools said the incident happened Wednesday afternoon during a drill at the school.
Six student resource officers from the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office were at the school for the drills. During the drill, a student reported seeing another student with a gun.
Officials said the SROs already at the scene responded immediately. After investigating, they found a 15-year-old male student in possession of a loaded .22-caliber handgun.
The student was taken into custody without incident, and was transported to the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center.
“We went right to the student and got the gun without incident,” said Captain Barry Hendrixson with the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office. “It was handled without any students being injured. We take any report of weapons or drugs on campus seriously. We always investigate immediately to the best of our ability.”
Officials said all students were safe and secure.
Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lisa Marchesoni said the student faced charges for having a weapon on campus. The student’s identity was not released due to him being a minor.
A hearing in juvenile court was scheduled for next week.
