According to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, a deputy was attempting to serve a warrant to 33-year-old Michael Adams.
Adams - who was charged with violating a protective order back in May - was scheduled to appear in court on July 7 but did not show up, officials said.
The suspect reportedly ran from deputies, at which point a foot pursuit ensued.
Officials said Adams ran toward a deputy and pulled out a knife. At that point, the deputy shot and killed him.
The officer has not yet been identified.
Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and a team of forensic scientists were called to the scene.
The findings will ultimately be turned over to the district attorney to decide if charges would be filed.
