A newcomer to the University of Tennessee football team has been charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly tried to strangle a woman.

Defensive lineman Alexis Johnson was arrested Wednesday and charged with aggravated assault.

According to a police report, Johnson tried to strangle a woman he used to date, and subsequently locked her in a room.

CBS affiliate WVLT said when the victim tried to leave the bedroom, Johnson allegedly blocked the door and said, "You think I won't [expletive] you up?"

A witness told police that Johnson also appeared to be punching the victim.

Johnson was being held in the Knox County Detention Center. A school spokesperson said he was suspended from all football related activities.

Johnson signed with Tennessee in December after two seasons at Fort Scott (Kansas) Community College.

His arrest comes one day after former Tennessee offensive lineman Mack Crowder was arrested in Florida as part of a sting operation targeting men using the Internet to seek underage females for sex. Crowder completed his Tennessee career this past season.
