Staff of a longtime family-owned business in North Nashville opened the doors to an unwanted and costly surprise on Saturday.

The owner of J.E. McMurtry Disposal will have to pay about $5,000 to repair several smashed truck windshields and door windows committed by what appeared to be vandals.

The manager Roger McMurtry believed a group of teenagers were behind the incident.

"Whenever you see somebody or group deliberately damage your stuff and cost you thousands of dollars, it's disheartening and really makes you angry," McMurtry told NewsChannel 5.

McMurtry's uncle started the company 59 years ago and employs 13 people, serving 10,000 customers throughout Middle Tennessee.

Burglars have targeted the business in the past, but the recent incident particularly upset Roger who grew up working with his family.

"It's so tough in this industry we are in to survive. It's hard enough to keep the trucks running," McMurtry added. "These trucks are hard-earned money."

The company was not sure if the trucks will be repaired on time to operate by Monday.

He said there were no disgruntled employees.

There are surveillance cameras, but they did not capture the incident.
