A 19-year-old woman has died following an early morning shooting at a home in Clarksville.

The incident happened around 12:55 a.m. Sunday at a home in the 1500 block of Cedar Springs Circle.

The victim, identified as 19-year-old Ashley Ashworth, was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment.

She died Monday morning as a result of her injuries.

Police said the shooting was not random. The suspect was identified as 19-year-old Demarkus Ely, of Mobile, Alabama.

Ely was taken into custody to be interviewed shortly after descriptions of the suspect and his vehicle were released.

Authorities confirmed Ely had been in an altercation with his intended target when he allegedly shot Ashworth, who was near the intended victim, instead.

Ely was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on a charge of aggravated assault. Additional charges were pending.

The investigation remained ongoing.
