A woman was rescued from the Stones River after her kayak filled with water.
Authorities said the call came in around 11:30 a.m. Saturday along the Stones River near the 1500 block of Broad Street.
Crews with the Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department's District 7, Ladder 9, and Engine 1 responded to the scene.
According to reports, the woman had been kayaking when her boat filled with water causing her to hold on to a tree limb in the river.
Two firefighters, Logan Gill and Josh Jackson, found the victim and got her safely to the shore.
Crews said, however, the rescue had an interesting twist. The victim, identified as Camille Jones, didn’t realize her own brother-in-law, Gill, would be part of the rescue efforts.
"My husband, father-in-law, and I just decided that we would take a Saturday kayaking trip," said Jones. "I never imagined it turning out like this."
According to Jones, the current got stronger as they went down the river, pushing her kayak into a tree. That’s when she saw an opportunity to leave the water, but the kayak began filling with water.
"Luckily, I was in a grove and was able to stand to wait on rescuers," Jones said.
Jones’ husband was able to use his phone’s GPS to find their location before calling 911.
Jones joked after realizing her brother-in-law was one of the rescuers, "I'm never going to live this down."
The family added the kayak Jones was in actually belonged to Gill’s wife.
"I'm sure Logan will be talking about this for a while at family gatherings," said Jones. "Fortunately," she laughed, "the only casualties today were two water bottles."
"Everything just happened to work out for the best in this situation," said Captain Walls. "We are very happy about the favorable outcome, even if there will be a little laughter at Mrs. Jones' expense."
