Local Woman Pushes For Overpass Regulations

One woman is pushing for new overpass and bridge regulations. This comes as five Michigan teens are facing murder charges for throwing a rock off one, and killing a father.

Driving under a bridge or an overpass is not something most people are cautious of, but for Lara Hazelwood there's always a risk.

"Every time I go on a trip or come into work I always look up, and especially at night," said Hazelwood.

25 years ago Lara lost her brother 22-year-old twin brother to rock throwers.

"Two boys threw a 54 pound rock over the overpass, it came through the windshield and killed him," said Hazelwood.

It was an early morning visit from a Tennessee State Trooper, that no one ever wants to see at their front door.

"My parents got that door bell ring and ever since then you can't ring the front door," said Hazelwood.

Larry Hazelwood's truck was destroyed, and his life was taken instantly when the rock came crashing through his windshield. Now Lara Hazelwood is pushing for change, and for measures to be taken to prevent someone else from losing their life.

Hazelwood's hoping large fences could be put up on overpasses so know one else loses their loved one to a crime like this.

"If I can do this and help somebody, that's my main goal," said Hazelwood.

You never fully heal from the loss, but Lara is hoping that with change, Larry would not have died in vain.

"I don't ever want anyone to ever have to feel that hurt," said Hazelwood.

So far Hazelwood has reached out to TDOT and some state legislators.

Metro police are still searching for the rock throwers that have damaged cars and injured people in Nashville.

Call Crime Stoppers at 615-74-CRIME if you know who may be responsible.
