NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Dozens of people braved today's rainy weather to see a reunion on the rails as historic locomotive number 576 made a stop in downtown Nashville.

As rain soaked Nashville's historic Union Station, the 118-year-old building was getting ready a reunion decades in the making.

" It's great to see them both back together again," one spectator said. "Today is a very historic day."

That history? Locomotive Number 576 pulling into the station for the first time since 1952.

"When I first heard the whistle blow it was just like, it was just an old friend coming back to life."

You may remember this iconic steam engine. Last month hundreds of people lined the streets as the locomotive left it's home Centennial Park. The first step of a process to preserve the train.

"Since we relocated the locomotive out of the park we've been working on it to make it railworthy, so we can tow it across town to our restoration site."

Today's celebration ended early as storms threatened downtown.

But organizers say the work is far from over. And they hope the engine doesn't have to wait 60 years to return to Union Station.
