NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson entertained and inspired a crowd at Lipscomb University during his latest stop in Music City.

Magic and his wife Cookie shared stories and life lessons during Lipscomb’s Imagine 2017 “Nashville: Prosperity for All Corners of the City” event.

While addressing students, Magic discussed the importance of getting an education and relying on their faith.

“Make sure while you are in school, you take advantage of your education,” said Johnson. “That is how you will achieve your goals and dreams.”

Since retiring from the NBA over 20 years ago, Magic has focused on encouraging kids in urban communities and investing in business interests across the country.

His speech at Lipscomb represents his latest investment in Music City. Last year, he spoke to kids at Maplewood High School about overcoming adversity and focusing on education. He also invested more than $20 million a decade ago in the Terrazo condo project in the Gulch. The project helped revitalize the area.

“It’s a great city,” said Johnson. “Anytime you come to Nashville, people welcome you with open arms. We’ve been so blessed. God has used us in so many ways. I think that is why we are excited about being here.”

Cookie Johnson also spoke about the importance of faith and how to maintain a strong marriage.

The speech came on the same night Lipscomb received a $15 million gift from the former owner of the Charlotte and New Orleans Hornets. It is the largest gift in the school’s history. The College of Entertainment and the Arts will now be named for George Shinn. The money will also help fund a new events center.
