Magnitude 2.8 earthquake hits Bedford County

SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — An earthquake shook an area near Shelbyville Tuesday night.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) the quake hit 13 km east of Shelbyville around 8:30 p.m.

It was a 2.8 magnitude with a depth of 7.4 km. Multiple people reported to the USGS that they felt the quake.

Bedford County Emergency Management Agency officials said they also received reports from many residents feeling the rumble. However, no reports of damage have been made yet.

This comes a little over a month after a 4.4 magnitude earthquake in Decatur. According to the National Weather Service office in Morristown, the largest earthquake on record in East Tennessee was a magnitude 4.7 near Marysville in 1973.
