JOELTON, Tenn. (WTVF) — A man is charged with killing his nephew and attempting to kill his nephew's girlfriend in Joelton Sunday morning.

Police say William Gardner, 77, shot Jerry Birdwell, 54, and Tammy Cornwell, 55, at the home they all shared on the 8000 block of Jackman Road around 5 am.

Birdwell died at the scene, and Cornwell was injured in the arm.

Cornwell told police Gardner kicked in their bedroom door and shot them, then ran off.

He was found parked near MNPD's Madison precinct, where he was taken into custody.
