Man Drowns When Canoe Flips On Harpeth River

KINGSTON SPRINGS, Tenn. – A man from El Salvador who was living in Dickson has drowned in the Harpeth River.

Authorities identified the victim as 34-year-old Martinez Torres. The incident happened around 10 a.m. Saturday.

Officials said he had rented a canoe with his family and friends. They were on the river when the canoe flipped.

According to reports, Torres landed in a deep hole and he did not know how to swim.

Officials said he had been wearing a life jacket, but he did not have it on when the canoe flipped.

Family and friends said Torres was struggling and added they could not make it to him in time. They were able to get him to the bank.

No charges were filed, and according to officials, alcohol was not believed to be a factor.
