NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A man was shot and killed on 25th Avenue North in Nashville Wednesday afternoon.

Metro Nashville Police officials say 38-year-old Samuel Lamont Smith was shot in the head in the parking lot of Resha's Bi-Rite Market.

When officers got to the scene, they found Smith deceased, lying near his car.

Smith was talking with an acquaintance when at least two suspects, described only as young black men, fired shots toward the two men from an alley behind the market, hitting Smith in the head.

Officials initially said they don't know if Smith was the one being targeted by the gunmen.

Editor's Note: Initial reports from the scene described shots being fired at a group of people rather than two individuals.

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story reported that the shooting happened near Nashville's West End. It has been updated to better reflect the area where the shooting took place.
