Authorities said a Memphis firefighter died after collapsing at the scene of a house fire.

Memphis Fire Department spokesman Lt. Wayne Cooke said 57-year-old Lt. Rodney Eddins collapsed Saturday night.

Cooke said Eddins was taken in critical condition to Methodist South Hospital in Whitehaven. He was pronounced dead later. No cause of death was immediately released.

Media outlets report the house fire was quickly brought under control, and Eddins went into the home to check for hot spots before collapsing.
