A Memphis police officer faces charges after an off-duty wreck.
The Commercial Appeal reports officers were called to the scene of a wreck near Shelby Farms at about 3:35 a.m. Sunday. A 2008 Dodge Ram had hit a tree and the driver had left the scene. Police found marijuana pipes and a small bag of marijuana near the truck, which was registered to officer Brian Kalapu.
Police located Kalapu at his home. He had sustained injuries and appeared to be intoxicated.
Kalapu is charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, public intoxication, leaving the scene of an accident, and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Kalapu, who was hired by MPD in January 2011, has been relieved of duty until the case is resolved.
