Council Member Questions Board's Gun Show Vote

Posted

A Metro Council Member has planned to file a resolution to fight the Fair Board’s decision to halt gun shows at the Nashville Fairgrounds.

Council Member, Steve Glover, expressed several concerns about the Metro Board of Fair Commissioner’s vote.  He said it may violate the Metro Charter, and could lead to possible lawsuits against the fairgrounds and the city.

“We are setting ourselves up for a potential lawsuit that could cost millions of dollars and I’m not willing to stand on the sidelines and let that happen,” said Glover.

Glover said a Metro Charter Amendment states existing “activities” occurring at the fairgrounds should be continued on the same site.  He added taking away the revenue regular gun shows at the fairgrounds could have a big financial impact.

“If you have a quarter of a million dollars disappear halfway into the year, I would worry they will have to come back to the council for supplemental funding,” said Glover.

Glover said Friday morning he planned to file a resolution that will challenge the vote.  He expected the issue would be addressed at the Dec. 15 Metro Council meeting.

The Fair Board voted Tuesday 3-0 to stop hosting gun shows at the city-owned property until board members can review safety practices and regulations.

Bill Goodman's Gun & Knife Show scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the Fairgrounds will go on as planned.

The Tennessee Firearms Association sent an email to members Thursday encouraging them to support the show.
