NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — The director of the Metro Public Health Department said he’s not concerned about the Tennessee Titans COVID-19 outbreak affecting future attendance at Nissan Stadium.
Dr. Michael Caldwell said the Titans submitted an “excellent plan” for keeping fans safe during games. He said health officials had a chance to see that plan firsthand at Nashville Soccer Club’s home game on Tuesday.
“Everything went well, and we expect it to continue to go well,” Caldwell said during Metro’s weekly COVID-19 update on Thursday.
Caldwell said although they can’t provide a zero-risk environment, it’s about the “lowest risk you possibly can get,” citing the protocols in place at the stadium. Aside from being an outdoor event, he said face masks are required at all times – unless you’re actively eating or drinking – and social distancing is enforced. There’s also limited alcohol sales.
“I feel very confident with what we observed on Tuesday, and I have no concern about any attendance moving forward,” he said.
The Titans were supposed to host the Pittsburgh Steelers last week for what was to be the first in-person game at Nissan Stadium. However, the cluster of positive cases within the Titans organization prompted the NFL to reschedule the game.
After more positive cases this week, Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills is now in jeopardy.
