NASHVILLE, Tenn (WTVF) — Metro Nashville police officers are using Halloween as an opportunity to connect with the kids who call the area home by hosting a trunk or treat at the Plaza Mariachi Saturday afternoon.
Many traditional Halloween activities are canceled because of COVID-19 but these officers are on the case to keep the fun times rolling.
So with social distancing practices and bags full of candy in hand children got a chance get to dress up and participate.
MNPD says it all comes down to community policing. Officers said it starts with events like giving out bags of treats on Halloween to help change some people's perception of the police.
"We love that there is that connection and we're trying to bridge those gaps; and we're making sure in those connections. It has to be intentional we are making those intentional connections between people," said Sgt. Brittany McElwee.
Despite a pandemic, McElwee with the Midtown Hills Precinct says it was a perfect day for Halloween.
"We're trying to do as much as we can to give these kids some sense of normalcy within these trying times," McElwee said.
The Midtown Hills Precinct also participated in two other Halloween events this week, a trunk or treat event for the children at Hermitage Hall and a parade through the Edgehill community.
