A Nashville elementary school near Opry Mills was put on heightened security while police searched for auto-theft suspects in the area.
Safety measures were initiated at Pennington Elementary School after an incident involving an auto theft by three teenage suspects around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, less than a quarter-mile from the school.
Officers with the Metro Nashville Park Police pulled the vehicle over in what was described as a typical traffic stop near the intersection of Wilford Drive and McGavock Pike.
Spokesperson Kris Mumford from the Metro Nashville Police Department said three male juvenile suspects fled from the vehicle to a nearby wooded area.
Officers from the Hermitage Precinct created a perimeter and began searching for the suspects.
Police searched the area between McGavock Pike and Opry Mills for over an hour before a resident spotted the teens hiding in a shed on the 2300 block of Ridgeland Drive, close to Briley Parkway.
All three were taken into custody and transported to juvenile detention. They were all charged with auto theft. Their identities were not released.
Reports initially said Pennington Elementary was placed on lockdown during the search. School officials said a lockdown was not initiated, although additional security measures were taken during the search.
