While metro students woke up to the news school was canceled, officials began to look at the school year calendar for future needs. On Tuesday Metro Schools used is fifth and final "snow day".
"Every year we build a certain number of snow days into the calendar so that we don't have to make up days that we missed this year we built in five days for snow and today is our fifth and final day," school spokesperson, Joe Bass said.
However, it will be awhile before officials make the decision to extend the school year. That's because there are a number of snow days and then make up days that are already added into the school year's calendar long before classes start.
If Metro were to miss any more school days after Tuesday, they'd look at having students go to school on make up days, which are currently in the calendar as teacher development days or in-service days.
It's not until students miss a dozen or more school days that officials will look at extending the school year.
However, if they miss school Wednesday, a make up day will have to be used. Monday, February 15, is the first one on the calendar, however, school officials believe that would be too soon to reschedule.
So the first make up day will be March, 16. In the end, student safety is the top priority.
"You know Davidson County is 500 square miles so we always like to lay eyes on what's happening on the roads before we make a decision to close schools so that's why they were out driving the roads at 3 o'clock this morning," Bass said.
