Montgomery County Deputies Warn Of Phone Scam

Deputies warned families about someone pretending to be with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and asking to pay a fine either because they missed jury duty or there’s a warrant out for their arrest.

Public Information Officer Sandra Brandon said the number on the caller ID will list the sheriff's office number but the person on the other end does not actually work with the office.

Brandon said people who don't believe the caller are given another number to call.

“When you call that number (931-233-3625) you actually have a phone tree that you have to listen to all of these options and tells you what number to press for certain area whether it's warrants or jury duty,” she said.

The caller is also told  if they don't pay the fines then an officer or deputy will come on out and arrest them.

Brandon said at least one woman has fallen victim to the scam and paid $25,000.

“They tell them to call down to the sheriff's office and stand in the lobby while they pay their fines over the phone,” she said.

Brandon’s reminding people if they're ever suspicious don't give out personal info over the phone.

“Residents can also call the Federal Trade Commission because they actually keep track of those numbers and if they see a spike in a certain area, they'll actually try and see a certain spike in those areas,” Brandon said.

The scammers aren't targeting a certain age. They're reaching out to everybody and anybody if you think you're being scammed you can call the Montgomery County Sheriff's office at 931-237-2429/.
