Montgomery County residents have voted against consolidation with Clarksville

The charter failed Tuesday night by a vote of 59-41 margin.

Supporters believed joining governments would help hold elected officials accountable and would prevent commissioners from also being county employees.

However, people who opposed it thought it would be more trouble than it's worth. For example, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office would merge with the Clarksville Police Department.

The sheriff would be the chief law enforcement officer. Clarksville Chief of Police Al Ansley opposed the charter.

Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan said she wasn’t against consolidation, but she was against this particular charter.
