Family and friends gathered at the funeral of 28-year-old Jessica M. Campos, the Murfreesboro mom who was killed when a suspect in a police chase crashed into her car.
It wasn't how Edgar Campos ever wanted to see his wife, standing over her casket. Surrounded by his loved ones for support, he said a final goodbye Wednesday at the New Generations Funeral Home in Antioch.
The 28-year-old mother of two was killed last Friday when officers say Garieon Simmons crashed a stolen SUV into her car after leading law enforcement on a pursuit that crossed county lines.
Kayce Lynn, just 7-months-old, was inside the vehicle at the time. "It was a miracle because the cop said the car seat broke in half. It was, it was miracle," her father, Edgar Campos said.
Just five days later, little Kayce Lynn was acting like a normal baby, interested in everything around her but unaware of the pain her father was in.
"She looks like her," Campos said. His family of four is now a family of three. "I'm going to try the best I can to take care of my kids."
However, he was uncertain of what the future holds for them. "I really need help for my kids," he said.
Garieon Simmons, 28, faces a slew of charges including vehicular homicide and driving on a revoked license.
Before crashing into Jessica's car, police said he stole an SUV from a Manchester funeral home as employees unloaded a body. He then lead officers on a chase that spanned two counties.
Jessica's family has questioned why the chase didn't end before Rutherford County. Coffee County Sheriff Steve Graves said after the crash his deputies followed protocol and they kept on the pursuit since it involved a stolen vehicle from their county.
Now a family is saying goodbye to a young mother, gone far too soon. "I want everybody to remember her as a happy person," Campos said.
