Nashville Cigar Culture Getting Younger, More Diverse

Once associated with an older crowd, cigar culture is getting younger and more diverse.

Step into the smoke-filled room at Smokers Abbey and you'll see it: the changing face of cigar enthusiasts in Music City.

"Weekends it was all just regulars and locals and now we get a bunch of people from out of town, a bunch of bachelor parties coming in," said Nathan Pohnert, manager of Smokers Abbey in East Nashville.

Pohnert said on any given day you'll see millennials and women, groups of cigar enthusiasts and people who want to relax and unplug, talk or read.

Like a craft brewery, these lounges cater to a cultured consumer and a particular pallet.

Justin Harris is a Nashville cigar blogger who said each lounge or cigar bar has its own distinct feel.

"A lot more lounges are opening. There were only a few years ago  today there are well over a dozen," said Harris.

Harris said he loves the changes he sees.

"There’s definitely been a shift in the demographic. It used to be a hobby for the affluent and now you see people of all ages, all races, all walks of life," he said.
