Outside one Nashville home it's red and white and blue.
"We placed that American flag the day he deployed," said Sandy Lowe.
But inside the Lowe home, there are so many colors.
"Every [hat] is unique. All different types of material," she said.
The dining room table is covered in hats, each one ready to help a soldier stay warm. Lowe's son Mark is stationed somewhere in Afghanistan.
She said her son enlisted after the sudden death of her daughter.
"This is the 27th month anniversary of our daughter Margaret Lowe's death. She died at the age of 21 from from a brain aneurysm while she was a student at the University of Virginia. Mark at the time was a student at Vanderbilt University. He left college and enlisted in the army. It was somewhat of a grief reaction but he's happy to serve his country and he's very happy to be doing his job," she said.
Now Lowe said it's her job to keep on knitting,
"Three weeks ago Mark called me from his bunker in the Hindu Kush and he said 'mom it's very cold here, 20 degrees at night and I'd like you to knit 30 hats for my company,'" she said.
Lowe said she started in on the project and realized quickly she couldn't do it alone.
So she then turned to Facebook and ask others to pitch in.
Now she has well over 70 hats but she's not done and hopes others will take the time to warm the heads and hearts of young soldiers who won't be home this Christmas.
