NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Sometimes, finding the right words to say "thank you" are said best in a song.

Musician Wade Hayes says he first spotted Jack about 75 miles outside of Nashville eating trash and hanging around a gas station.

"He had ticks, he had open holes in him. He was real thin and he comes up to my truck and just jumps up. Sits down like he belongs there and looks up at me as if to say, 'I’m ready,'" Hayes said. "The little guy needed help so I took them home. Turned out to be the best dog I’ve ever had in my life."

Hayes took the dog home and says saving the dog saved him, after he was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer.

"I can remember getting out and walking him with the chemo bag hanging off of me," he said.

Hayes says Jack kept him active and moving while he fought two rounds of cancer. Now, in remission, he says thanking his faithful, aging dog was the only way to express his gratitude. He calls the song, "Who Saved Who" and says every day with his best friend is a gift.

"We just try to enjoy every day as much as we can," he said.
