Gas line explosion causes damage in San Francisco

A gas line exploded in San Francisco on Wednesday, causing serious damage to five buildings, local fire officials said.

Flames went up to 20 feet into the air, and continued for nearly two hours as firefighters fought the fire. No one was injured from the explosion.

The explosion was reportedly caused when workers struck a gas line when working on underground fiber optic cables.

"We were told that there were eight workers in that facility during fiber optic work underground. All have been accounted for," Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said.

Nearly a one-block radius around the fire was evacuated.

Hayes-White said the explosion was something firefighters were prepared for.

"It's something that we're accustomed to doing. We're trained for it," Hayes-White said.
