Melania Trump's speech writer offers resignation, gets rejected

After Melania Trump delivered a speech on Monday, which in part was taken from an address given by Michelle Obama in 2008 at the Democratic National Convention, Trump's speech writer admitted to mistakes in writing the speech, and offered to resign.

Melania's husband Donald Trump, the GOP's nominee-in-waiting, has rejected the resignation of Meredith McIver, McIver said in a statement Wednesday.

"In working with Melania Trump on her recent First Lady speech, we discussed many people who inspired her and messages she wanted to share with the American people," McIver said. "A person she has always liked is Michelle Obama. Over the phone, she read some passages from Mrs. Obama's speech as examples. I wrote them down and later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech.

"I did not check Mrs. Obama's speeches. This was a mistake and I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps, as well as Mrs. Obama. No harm was meant."

McIver added that she apologizes for the incident.
