Women's reproductive rights big topic ahead of midterms

Posted

President Donald Trump's pick to be the next Supreme Court justice drew protests on day one. Many pro-choice Democrats worry women's reproductive rights are at risk.

“At the federal level, our Supreme Court-- that decision of Roe v. Wade--is very much on the line,” says Democratic strategist Karen Finney.

Democrats point to the president's promise while on the campaign trail, where he spoke of overturning Roe. V Wade.

“President Trump made it very clear during the campaign he was going to elect someone who would help strip away Roe v. Wade,” Finney says. “He made that very clear.”

However, in a meeting with Maine Sen. Susan Collins, Brett Kavanaugh told her he considers Roe v. Wade settled law. Republicans believe the issue is being used to drum up support on the left.

“I don't think reproductive rights are on the line, but I do think some people are going to try to make it a big issue,” says John Feehery, a Republican strategist. “I don't think it's gonna be the top issue or in the top 10 issues of this campaign.”
