MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WTVF) — Plans to build a 384-unit condo complex near Murfreesboro's Greenway System are being met with frustration from people who live nearby, who say the project will destroy the area's beauty.
The project, lead by Blue Sky Construction in Murfreesboro, would include several types of housing, ranking from $200,000 to $500,000. The 41-acre complex would be built near Cason Trail and Stoney Meadow Drive, on an area that is a small forest. Project leaders are asking the city to change the zoning of the area from single-family residential to multi-family residential.
"My reaction is outrage," Tavner McKelley said. McKelley's backyard neighbors the development area. "We see deer, possums, raccoons, everything you can imagine in our backyard."
She worries the wildlife will be replaced with a traffic headache.
"Everybody will have to share this tiny street with 384 people, that could be 700 to 800 cars!" McKelley added.
She's not the only person making noise about the project. More than 3,000 people have signed a petition urging the city to to reject the bid to rezone the land and block the development altogether.
"It's a beautiful peaceful place, and I'd hate to see that destroyed," McKelley said.
Blue Sky Construction Owner Brian Burns said he bought the land last year. He said there's a big need for housing in Murfreesboro, and the project can help the fast-growing community.
Burns added that if the city rejects his big to rezone the land for condos, he would build 200 homes in the plot of land instead.
