WARTBURG, Tenn. - New information has emerged in the attack of a corrections officer at Morgan County Correctional Complex.
Officials with the Tennessee Department of Correction said Aaron Tate was facing new charges after assaulting an officer who tried to stop him from walking off with contraband.
The guard had to be rushed to the hospital for his injuries.
This week lawmakers said the incidents at Tennessee prisons have been downplayed and the problem could stem from staffing shortages.
Corrections officials said that attempts to link the assault to shortages were "erroneous and misguided."
Communications Director Neysa Taylor also added:
"While there are inherent risks in this field, any assault against a member of our staff will not be tolerated.
The Department is constantly researching and implementing best practices to make our staff, inmate population and the community safer."
