Howard's Hope is a non-profit that gives disadvantaged kids access to local health and education programs, with an emphasis on water safety. Together, with Metro Parks and Recreation and BlueCross BlueShield Tennessee Health Foundation, they're on a mission to keep kids safe.
"We've had a little over 300 children come through the program so far, and it is heartwarming to see these children acquire this life-saving skill," said Steve Reeves, Director of Howard's Hope.
Every year, thousands of kids drown accidentally. About 70 percent of African American, 60 percent of Latino and 40 percent of Caucasian children cannot swim.
"It's important for all kids to learn how to swim and especially kids that may be less fortunate. Sometimes we forget about them but it's important for all kids to learn how to swim," said swimming instructor Dennis Morrow.
The "Flying Fish" program is free to kids who qualify.
