CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - A Chattanooga firefighter has helped rescue an infant from the third floor of a blazing apartment building.
Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner said off-duty firefighter Lt. Vernon Lane, who lives in the building, got out safely, but then saw a mother with her 10-month-old child trapped on the third-floor balcony.
Garner said the woman dropped the boy toward Lane, who caught him. The mother then jumped, landing on top of both.
Garner said the mother and child were being assessed at a hospital, but their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
The blaze at Hidden Creek Apartments was reported at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday.
Officials said more than a dozen residents were displaced by the fire, which caused extensive damage and destroyed multiple units.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
