RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WTVF) — One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting early Wednesday.

According to the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office, deputies were conducting a traffic stop on the suspect just before 2 a.m. on I-24 near the Joe B. Jackson exit near Murfreesboro.

Deputies had learned the driver, 71-year-old Robert Michael Wemmer, had an outstanding Sexual Assault warrant out of Ohio.

Officials said that when confronted, he refused to respond to deputies’ commands.

According to the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office, the situation escalated and the deputy used a stun gun. Wemmer then reportedly grabbed a semi-automatic handgun and fired at least once at deputies, who returned fire, striking him.

He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Blind woman entertains assisted living neighbors, plays seven instruments

“I’ve never met anyone like Tennie.”

That’s how one neighbor at Stones River Manor in Murfreesboro describes Tennie Fitzpatrick, who has mastered as many as seven different musical instruments. Each day, Tennie shares those talents with residents, workers and visitors. It’s an ability Tennie herself believes is “a gift from God.” That’s because Tennie is blind, and overcame a difficult, abusive childhood.  Forrest Sanders shares this truly inspirational story.
