With Christmas and New Years quickly approaching, holiday parties have also been planned. Parties mixed with millions of travelers on the roads could be a recipe for disaster if not careful.

On Thursday, officials with the the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the State Highway Safety Office announced they will step up patrols and searches for impaired drivers this holiday season.

The announcement came as agencies promote National Drunk Drugged Driving Prevention Month.

So far in 2017, 167 people have died due to impaired drivers. It’s a story Tanya Read unfortunately knows too well as her 17-year-old son Nicolas was killed by an impaired driver in 2015.

She spoke Thursday about how it changes lives and the importance of not getting behind the wheel intoxicated.

Officers said these accidents are 100 percent preventable by finding a sober driver.
