It can be challenging running a small business especially in a growing city like Nashville but one woman welcomes the city's growth.

Janet Carmichael is the owner of two franchise stores Big Frog Custom T-shirts here in Middle Tennessee.

"I'd say that probably one of my passions is problem solving and one thing that small business ownership enables you to do is problem solve every day," she said.

After 20 years working in the insurance world she stepped out on a leap of faith for a career change.

So in 2011, she opened her first Big Frog franchise store in Franklin. After that worked, she hopped over to Green Hills.

"My husband and I at the time were really interested in being in the business but also having the ability later in life to pull back from the business," she said.

Consultant Dan Aranoff with FranNet helped the couple choose their right business path.

"It's really helping people evaluate whether business ownership is right for them. I think there is plenty of growth for all business owners," Aranoff said.

FranNet, founded in 1987, helps match individuals with franchise ownership opportunities. Carmichael said it was the best fit for her.

"I think planning for one is you’re number one priority second I think is networking with the community," she said.

October is National Women’s Small Business month, Carmichael’s advice to other women looking to take a bite out of the small business sector was do what you love.

"Women who own their own business are more successful if it's a product or a service that they feel passionate about. Every body loves a t-shirt," she smiled.

Carmichael said she averages about 40 calls a day. She's also starting to get more calls from bachelorette parties coming into town.
