NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Give yourself a little extra time on the roads this week. Officers all across the state and the South are cracking down on speeding.

“Operation Southern Shield” runs from noon Monday to Sunday night.

The operation is an initiative with law enforcement in Tennessee and several states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.

This time of year, a lot of people are hitting the roads to travel. Because of this, the Tennessee Highway Safety Office says they see more deadly crashes.

In 2016, speeding was a factor in crashes that killed more than 10,000 people in the U.S., according to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Speeding also accounts for almost 30% of all deadly crashes.
