MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Tenn. (WTVF) — A plan to rezone an area of agriculture land into duplexes is shot down. People who live along State Highway 76 near I-24 in Montgomery County say they don't want any apartments, duplexes or large structures in the areas.

Montgomery County residents were asking the Commissioners to vote no on a proposal that would change the image of their neighborhood.

The commissioners were scheduled to vote on the hearing Monday, January 14, 2019.

“If we approve this than the developer can do whatever they want that falls under that classification,” said Commissioner Joshua Beal.

Beal even used his time to ask anyone in attendance who opposes the rezoning to please stand; in which many people stood in solidarity.

Kruekeberg Exclusive Homes sold the property after looking to create a set of luxury duplexes near exit 11 on state highway 76.

But neighbors said not so fast.

“It's been the first attempt at apartments, at duplexes in our area and, we're an area of family farms, and homes and that's historically what it's been,” said Keith Boyd.

Keith Boyd says with the development that could mean more traffic on the 2-lane highway.

Boyd said that can make for a dangerous commute.

“There have been several initiatives to try and rezone it to zoning that's not consistent to our area; it doesn't exist there,” Boyd said.

After all the push back, the land was sold again, this time a resident.

“This land is already owned now by Mr. Miglaccio who is going to be the new owner. He does not plan to develop it, he plans to remodel the home that is existing on it and put one of his children in there,” said Commissioner Joe Smith.

Commissioner Smith said people need to consider the new owner's plans when casting a vote.

However, the Commissioners voted in favor of the residents.

“It looks like 80 percent of them voted against it which is what we wanted,” said Boyd.

Miglaccio family did not want to comment on the matter.
