NASHVILLE, Tenn. – An argument about litter led to one person getting shot overnight in south Nashville, according to police.

The incident happened shortly before midnight Wednesday, at the Hickory Lake Apartments on Apache Trail.

Officials with Metro police said 20-year-old Eli Popoco and 28-year-old Ismael Popoca-Rayo were drinking beer in a truck when they tossed the empty cans out of the window.

The victim asked them to pick up the litter, at which point an argument ensued.

The altercation escalated and the victim was shot in the shoulder. The 25-year-old was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical, where he is expected to make a full recovery.

Police said the suspects drove off in a truck and struck a car as he left.

Officers reportedly found the truck with a bullet hole in the window. Several shell casings were found about three miles from where the shooting took place.

Popoco was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault. Popoca-Rayo was arrested a short time later on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, vandalism, leaving scene of an accident and tampering with evidence.

No additional details were known.
