A child was not hurt after police say a suspect stole a vehicle at a Smyrna gas station and later crashed the car. They're currently searching for a possible accomplice in the case.

The incident happened at 4:20 p.m. Sunday at a Valero Market at the corner of Weakley Lane and Sam Ridley Parkway.

Police said 33-year-old Corbett L. Newman stole a car with a small child inside. The child’s father tried to stop the car as it was leaving but was unsuccessful.

Another driver at the gas station picked him up and tried to catch up to the car while they called 911.

A police pursuit ensued down Weakley Lane and onto Couchville Pike. The vehicle crashed behind a home in the 6000 block of Couchville Pike and the suspect fled on foot into the woods.

An officer later found the child unharmed.

Newman was eventually taken into custody by Rutherford County deputies on Henley Road.

Police said he’s being charged with felony theft of a vehicle, driving on a revoked license, evading arrest and reckless endangerment. Other charges may be pending.

He may also be facing charges from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said they’re still looking for a potential accomplice in the case.

Newman got out of the driver’s door of a silver, four-door Acura and entered the stolen truck in the Valero parking lot. His passenger got into the driver’s seat after Newman exited the Acura.

Anyone who may know this person was urged to contact Smyrna Police at 615-459-6644. The investigation remained ongoing.
