TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- Authorities said a police dog chasing two suspected car thieves was fatally shot, and one suspect was found dead after a standoff in Ohio.

Toledo police followed the suspects from a car into a vacant home Wednesday evening. Police Chief George Kral said the dog went into the crawl space where the suspect was hiding. The suspect, 27-year-old Reginald Marshall, killed the dog and was hit by return fire from an officer.

The Blade newspaper reported the other suspect was eventually arrested. Police said it wasn't clear whether Marshall, who was wanted on a murder warrant, died from police gunfire or self-inflicted wounds.

Police lined up with their hands over their hearts in tribute as workers wheeled away the body of the German Shepherd, named Falco.
