MANCHESTER, Tenn. – The Manchester Police Department has reached out to help protect the Coffee County military recruiting center in an unusual way.
The U.S. Army Recruiting Station in Manchester received a delivery of over 300 Sandbags Wednesday afternoon.
The sandbags were placed by the front windows as a way to protect the recruiters inside. The police department heard about the community's concern in keeping the center safe and knew they had to do something.
"My son was recruited out of that station (and) I have a son serving in the U.S. Army. It's personal for a lot of different reasons," said Assistant Police Chief Adam Floied.
Floied and other officers volunteered to help fill the sandbags. The bags were in a storage facility and hadn't really been used.
"We will be happy to bring them more,” he said. “Whatever they need, we're most certainly glad to help them.”
Less than 70 miles from Chattanooga, the Manchester recruitment center was the only one that remained opened out of the 4 other offices on Hillsboro Boulevard. Recruiters have to unlock the door before letting anyone in.
