Four people broke into a gun store in Greenbrier, but got away with nothing. They were spooked by a passerby and chased by an off-duty officer.
The attempted burglary happened Saturday around 2:30 am at Guns and Leather at 2216 Highway 41.
According to Greenbrier Police Chief K.D. Smith, four people dressed in all black parked across the street from the store.
The suspects allegedly cased out the building for a few minutes before breaking the glass front door.
Chief Smith said it looked like they were trying to figure out how to get the bars on the door open when a car drove by and spooking them away from the building.
“There's a lot of pistols, a lot of high powered riffles,” Smith said. “That's defiantly stuff we don't want out on the street in the wrong hands.”
When they ran away, they were spotted by an off-duty Greenbrier Police officer who happened to be heading home.
“He saw them run across 41,” Smith said. “Then when he saw the vehicle come flying out.”
police said an SUV was waiting to help the four people get away.
The off-duty officer followed them and called officers but couldn’t safely catch the SUV.
Chief Smith said he was proud of the actions of his off duty officer who was in the right place at the right time, which reflects of how his officers view the community they serve.
“Everybody comes in and they put their whole heart in their job because they love it,” Smith Said. “They want to try to make this town as safe as possible.”
They asked anyone with information about the attempted burglary to call the Greenbrier Police Department.
